5 Spring Cleaning Tips for Streak-Free Windows and Glass

Keep your windows sparkling this Spring!

As the sun starts shining a little brighter, it’s the perfect time to freshen up your home, office, or vehicle with a good spring cleaning. One area that often gets overlooked—or done in a rush—is your glass surfaces. Whether it’s windows, mirrors, or your car windshield, streak-free glass can make a big difference in how fresh and bright your space feels. As your trusted full-service glass experts, we’re sharing our top five spring cleaning tips to help you get that professional, streak-free finish on all your glass surfaces.

1.Choose the Right Day: Avoid cleaning your windows on a sunny day. While it may seem like the perfect time to tackle the task, the sun can actually dry your cleaner too quickly, leaving behind streaks. Opt for an overcast day when the glass is cooler to the touch—this gives you more time to wipe the cleaner before it evaporates.
2.Use the Right Tools: Put down the paper towels and grab a microfiber cloth or a squeegee instead. Paper towels tend to leave lint and can cause streaking, while microfiber is soft, absorbent, and reusable. For larger surfaces, a squeegee is your best friend!

3.Choose the Best Glass Cleaner for the Job:  When it comes to getting that crystal-clear, streak-free shine, the type of glass cleaner you use matters. There are two main types to consider: ammonia-based and ammonia-free .
  • Ammonia-based cleaners are very effective at cutting through grease, fingerprints, and stubborn residue. They're a great choice for untreated glass, like standard home windows, mirrors, and most commercial glass. If you're cleaning non-tinted vehicle windows or glass without any protective films or coatings, ammonia-based products can deliver an ultra-clear finish with minimal effort.
  • However, if you're cleaning tinted windows, film-covered glass, or any surface with a protective coating, it's best to avoid ammonia. Over time, ammonia can degrade the tint or film, causing it to bubble, fade, or peel. In these cases, ammonia-free cleaners are a safer choice and still provide excellent results without compromising the integrity of the glass surface.

4.Clean in a Z Pattern: Instead of circular motions, wipe in a Z-shaped pattern, starting from the top and working your way down. This method helps to avoid re-depositing dirt and keeps your cleaning motion efficient. Bonus tip: Wipe one side of the glass horizontally and the other side vertically, this makes it easy to spot which side a streak is on!
5.Don't Forget the Details: When cleaning windows, don’t neglect the frames, tracks, and screens. Use a vacuum or small brush to remove dust and debris, then wipe with a damp cloth. This extra step not only improves the overall appearance but also prevents buildup that can affect window function over time.

Do Your Windows Need to be Replaced? Spring is the perfect time to refresh your home, and that includes your windows. As the snow melts and pollen blooms across Southeast Michigan , many homeowners in Genesee County, Oakland County, and Livingston County start thinking about spring cleaning. But when should you simply clean your windows, and when is it time to replace them? Understanding the signs can save you energy costs, improve your home’s comfort, and increase curb appeal. Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Windows Certain issues indicate a replacement is necessary: Condensation between panes – If you notice fogging inside double- or triple-pane windows, the seal is failing, which reduces energy efficiency. Drafts or cold spots – Older windows can let heat escape, raising your heating bills during Michigan winters. Cracks, chips, or warped frames – Damaged glass or frames can compromise safety and functionality. Difficulty opening or closing – Windows that stick or jam may need professional attention or full replacement. Outdated style or energy inefficiency – Modern glass technology, like Low-E or insulated windows, can lower energy bills and improve comfort.
